History |
The
Aeroclub was founded in 1979 and since then it has gone through many phases,
including good ones but also periods of decline in terms of activities
and member numbers.
For the first years, it developed
mainly aeromodelling although it organized also a few small scale general
aviation events, with the participation of other Greek Aeroclubs.
In the early 90s, Chios was
one of the few places in Greece with an excellent and completely free aeromodelling
facility. The asphalt runway with a length of over 120mt (350ft) is still
a pride and offers an excellent ground for new and existing aeromodellers.
The donation of an airplane
in 1998 started a completely new era for the Club, fulfilling a dream that
existed for decades for the older members, and allowing the Club to grow
and to move one step further.
The flight school, organized
in 1999 with the assistance and technical know-how of Thessaloniki Aeroclub,
is slowly but steadily covering the essential need for pilots. The number
of members is still quite small but adequate for it's current activities.
The Aeroclub of Chios is
a member of the HELLENIC AERONAUTICAL AND AIRSPORTS FEDERATION (ELAO).
